Electronics testing and serial number traceability system

The quality engineer finds the origin, software version and test history of the components at the product. If you notice a fault, it is easier to determine which other products need to be checked.

The results of the optical control, electrical and functional test are not always transmitted to the assessor with the application applied and the state of the product being checked. It is difficult to justify the release and separate the actual defect from the test or data transfer error.

How the solution works

  1. Production facts combine the unit with batches of components and the software version used.
  2. An optical control, electrical or functional test record is accepted with the source and version of the test program.
  3. The failed result is passed on to the evaluation and the necessary repair or verification action is determined.
  4. The re-test complements the previous story and links to the change made.
  5. The approved release and search for the problem component is based on the entire relevant unit history.

Key challenges

  • Quality control is disconnected from production
  • Limited batch and component traceability
  • Test data not linked to a specific serial number

Solution capabilities

Components and unit relationships

The relationship between products and components is determined by registered filing and consumption. Missing records are noted in the traceability search.

Test entry

Measurements, the result and the version of the program used are saved to the automatic optical control (AOI), electrical or functional test.

History of Programming

If a product is programmed, the actually recorded version and its change to a specific test are saved. This feature does not apply to software-free products.

Repair and retest

The fault, the modified part and the re-result are linked chronologically without rewriting the original record.

Quality limitation

Holds and approved releases identify the specific units affected and communicate the decision to operations.

An Impacted Scope Study

Related products and missing links are found by component batch, program or common process event.

Business context

Quality control is disconnected from production
The results of the optical control, electrical and functional test are not always transmitted to the assessor with the application applied and the state of the product being checked. It is difficult to justify the release and separate the actual defect from the test or data transfer error.
Limited batch and component traceability
Component filing and consumption facts do not always preserve the connection between a batch of a component and a manufactured plate or product. Once information about a problem component is received, it is impossible to accurately identify the affected products.
Test data not linked to a specific serial number
Records of programming, initial testing, repairs and retests of the same unit do not have a consistent history of events. The end successful result can hide previous failures, and the cause of the repairs is difficult to compare.
The question of warranty is examined by product history
The customer is applying for a specific device, so the response requires its components, software and test data. The linked serial number history helps to determine what to check more quickly. A reasonable answer and clear follow-up are important in maintaining confidence in the supplier after-sales.

Potential impact (%)

The ranges indicate an illustrative relative change in the metric under the stated assumptions. Results depend on the starting position and actual use of the solution. Percentages for different metrics must not be added together.

Manual restoration of test and repair history

16–42%Decreasing

This illustrative scenario assumes that 40-70% of information searches and repeated cross-checks can be addressed. That share is assumed to fall by 40-60%. Company data is needed to verify both the addressable workload and the resulting change.

The active work of an engineer in investigating a failure of similar complexity is measured.

Time for clarification of unconnected test results

12–36%Decreasing

This illustrative scenario assumes that 30-60% of manual data entry and handover work can be addressed. That share is assumed to fall by 40-60%. Company data is needed to verify both the addressable workload and the resulting change.

The employee's time is measured to link the test result to a product or batch. Comparisons are made between cases of similar amount of documents, with separate recording of records that the connection failed to confirm.

Conditional calculation scenarios. The assumptions have not been validated against client measurements.

When this solution is relevant

  • A positive retest conceals the initial failure and its history of repair.
  • A component batch quality report has been received, but the affected products are not able to be reliably identified.

Implementation requirements

For test traceability, product identifiers, test conditions, and preservation of primary and repeat results are compatible. Programmable products require a history of the software version, and missing source detail is listed within the evaluation limits.

Further development options

  • Linking warranty failure to production tests
  • Comparison of causes of repeated repairs
